Gospel Music Pioneer Bishop J.C. White Earns First Stellar Award Nomination at Age 87

Legendary songwriter celebrates a career milestone as his music continues to shape generations of Gospel artists

BROOKLYN, NY — After more than six decades of faithfully contributing to the Gospel music landscape, legendary singer, songwriter, pastor, and Gospel pioneer Bishop J.C. White has received his first Stellar Award nomination.

At 87 years old, White is celebrating a remarkable career milestone as “Someone Who Cares About Me,” recorded by Lucinda Moore and Bishop Paul S. Morton, has been nominated for Gospel Duo/Chorus Group of the Year at the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards.

The nomination comes during an extraordinary season for White, whose songwriting contributions can also be found on two Stellar Award-nominated projects: J.J. Hairston’s The Reunion and Vincent Bohanan & SOV’s Live in New York, both contenders for Album of the Year.

A revered architect of traditional Gospel music, White’s influence spans more than 60 years through his work with the Institutional Radio Choir, The J.C. White Singers, Chicago Mass Choir, and the renowned Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar. His songs have inspired generations of worshippers and artists alike, helping to define the sound of modern Gospel music.

Among his most celebrated compositions is the timeless classic “Stretch Out,” originally recorded by Shirley Caesar in 1966 and later earning Gold Record status. The song has experienced a resurgence in recent years through the spirited ad-libs of Gospel recording artist Donnisha Ballard, introducing White’s music to a new generation of listeners.

His extensive catalog also includes beloved Gospel standards such as “Talk It Over with Jesus,” “Right Now If You Believe,” “Keys to the Kingdom,” “II Chronicles (This Is the Answer),” “Please Touch Somebody,” “You Can Make It,” and “Satisfied (With Jesus Alone).”

Many of White’s most cherished compositions were first brought to life by his wife and ministry partner, Evangelist Gloria White, whom he will celebrate 67 years of marriage with this August.

Reflecting on the recognition, White noted that opportunities for Gospel artists were far different when his career began.

“Back when we were recording, I don’t believe there were awards shows or categories dedicated to Gospel artists,” White shared in a previous interview. “And when those opportunities eventually came, our record labels often didn’t submit the music for consideration.”

As the Gospel music industry evolved and awards programs gained prominence, White shifted much of his focus to pastoral ministry, shepherding a church in Bridgeport, Connecticut. That ministry would later become a launching pad for future Gospel stars, including Youthful Praise, led by his son-in-law J.J. Hairston, and acclaimed vocalist Lucinda Moore, both of whom are among this year’s Stellar Award nominees.

While the nomination may be White’s first, his impact on Gospel music has been felt for generations. This long-overdue recognition serves as a testament to a lifetime of ministry, songwriting excellence, and unwavering dedication to the message of faith through music.
