Legendary Gospel Artist Norman Hutchins Passes Away
It is with deep sorrow and reverence that the National Association of Gospel Radio (NAGR) extends our heartfelt condolences on the passing of the beloved Bishop Norman Hutchins — a true general in the Kingdom of God, a gifted worshipper, and a musical trailblazer whose voice and ministry reshaped the sound and soul of gospel music for generations.
Bishop Hutchins was not only a multi-award-winning gospel recording artist and songwriter, but a man of profound vision, unwavering faith, and remarkable integrity. With a catalog of anointed songs that have become staples in churches, radio stations, and hearts around the world — including “God’s Got a Blessing (With My Name on It),” “Battlefield,” “Emmanuel,” “Where I Long to Be,” and “Jesus I Love You”— he inspired and uplifted millions with the message of hope, healing, and the unfailing love of God.
His contributions to gospel music were not simply artistic — they were spiritual, transformative, and enduring. As both a recording artist and a pastor, Bishop Hutchins used every platform to glorify God, minister to souls, and demonstrate excellence in service to the Body of Christ. His passion for worship, his unforgettable voice, and his commitment to the call of God made him a treasured figure not only in music but in ministry worldwide.
The gospel radio community, in particular, feels this loss deeply. Bishop Hutchins was a strong supporter of gospel radio and a constant presence across our airwaves. His music helped define eras, shaped programming, and encouraged listeners during their most difficult and most joyful moments. His life was a testament to the power of faith, the beauty of perseverance, and the joy of living a life fully surrendered to God’s will.
To his loving family, to the congregation he faithfully shepherded, and to all who knew and loved him — we stand with you in prayer. May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in the days ahead. May you find comfort in knowing that Bishop Hutchins has received his heavenly reward, and that his legacy will continue to speak through every life he touched.
He has fought a good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith. And now, there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness.
With deepest sympathy and abiding respect,
Mr. Charles Edward Johnson (Pastor CeJay)
