Last Saturday, I had the chance to experience a LIVE recording like no other, in the city of Tampa, Florida. Considering I had never heard of Bishop and Lady Jefferson, I had no idea what to expect from them musically. After doing a little research, I realized that not only were “The Jefferson’s” accomplished pastors, authors and songwriters, they were also pillars in the Tampa community.

Dr. Brenda Jefferson is a woman of passion, benevolence and vision. All of these attributes are what prompted her to write songs that will change a generation. “The Pen of a Ready Writer” is a collection of songs that Dr. Jefferson wrote to bless the people of God, however, she did not want just anybody to sing her songs, choosing a “Who’s Who” of gospel music’s elite.

Produced by Grammy & Stellar Award winning producer, Myron Butler, this LIVE recording featured the likes of Stellar Award winner, Lucinda Moore, Stellar Award nominee, Lecresia Campbell, Shawn McLemore, Rhonda McLemore, Ryan Horton, Sunday Best finalist, Danetra Moore and multiple Stellar and Grammy Award winner, Dorinda Clark- Cole.

The evening was set for worship with a packed house and a song entitled, “The Worshipper in Me” from Tyscot Records newest signee, Javen. The song penetrated the atmosphere and ushered in the presence of God for the ultimate worship experience.

ACT ONE

Song 1-“Make a Joyful Noise” featuring Shawn McLemore- This upbeat song had a funky groove; pulsating bass line and had the entire crowd rocking side to side. Shawn McLemore’s powerful vocals give it that extra kick it needs to be a radio smash.

Song 2- “Let’s Celebrate” featuring Lucinda Moore- We all know that Lucinda’s vocal range is out of this world and she proved that and so much more on this number. The words, “Let’s celebrate with our song” was the drive of the song and Lucinda brought it home like no other.

Song 3- “Eyes Have Not Seen” featuring Ryan Horton- Underground Christian artist Ryan Horton displays his tenor on this mid-tempo praise and worship song for the ages.

Song 4- “Turn It Loose” featuring Danetra Moore- This just may be one of the first recorded songs you hear Danetra on post Sunday Best. The result? True anointing, awesome showmanship and amazing vocals. Danetra had the crowd on their feet as she sang the words, “You got to loose lies and let it go, loose anger and let it go.” This song was reminiscent of “The Battle” by Yolanda Adams and once Danetra finished with it, the atmosphere was changed and took several minutes to get back into the recording.

ACT 2

Song 5- “Peace Be Still” featuring Lucresia Campbell- “Peace brings joy and happiness and it flows like a river. Let not your heart be troubled.” Those words not only ministered to the crowd, but also to Lucresia herself, as she laid her brother to rest just one week prior to the recording.

Song 6- “My Heart Is Fixed” featuring Dorinda Clark- Cole- This was the moment that everyone was waiting for and Dorinda Clark- Cole did not disappoint! There is no doubt that Dr. Brenda Jefferson wrote this song with Dorinda in mind because the music, the words and the drive had her name written all over it. After the song was over, she went back into it at least half a dozen times because it was just that good. She sang across the stage and sat down at the edge of the stage proclaiming that her heart has been fixed and her mind made up. This song is definitely a winner and the best of the night!

Song 7- “Take Delight In Me” featuring Rhonda McLemore- “The lyrics, “If The Lord delight in us he will bring us into this land and giveth us a land that flows with milk and honey”, resonated with the crowd, as McLemore’s powerful soprano flooded the room and took us back to the familiar place of praise and worship.

Song 8- “Mighty God” featuring Sam Washington- Crowd favorite and Tampa native, Sam Washington, wasted no time getting the crowd on their feet for the last song of the night. Another upbeat contemporary song, “Might God”, has the potential to be another radio song for Dr. Brenda Jefferson.

I must say that producer extraordinaire, Myron Butler, did an excellent job producing this session. I have been to many recordings and it is very rare that I like every song, but in this case I did. Furthermore, at every recording I have ever been to, they have to at least do one song over. Not so in this case. The energy was high all night and the choir and background singers were superb. Dr. Brenda Jefferson is indeed a woman with a vision and she wrote the vision down and made it plain.
