It was a not so long nail biting night but Barack Obama will remain the 44th President of the United States of America. If you are like me, you were watching CNN’s coverage of Election Night 2012 and hoping that a miracle would happen. Surely within the first few hours, it was a bit nerve wrecking as Governor Mitt Romney was receiving more of the popular vote and electoral votes than the president. However, for some strange reason, the plethora of Romney supporters in the Massachusetts celebration party, never really celebrated, as they knew that the more important states had yet to tally their votes.
Although Obama ended up the victor, it could have easily gone the other way if African Americans and young voters would have stayed home. There were actually more African Americans voting in this election than in the historic 2008 election and many skeptics thought this would not be the case.
By the 10:30 hour, the president took the lead in electoral votes but still trailed in the popular vote and by 11:00, most of the votes were in. Here is how the president faired: Barack Obama won:Virginia, Nevada, Wisconsin, Oregon, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico, California, Hawaii, Washington, Minnesota, Ohio, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Vermont, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Illinois.
If you look at the electoral map, one would think that Romney was the clear cut winner with majority of the map appearing to be red. However, if there is anything we learned from the 2000 election, we learned that the electoral votes is what counts and Barack Obama won big in battleground states. Here is how Romney faired: Mitt Romney won:Missouri, Idaho, North Carolina, Arizona, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, Kentucky, West Virginia, South Carolina, Indiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Georgia.
The president also made history as the first president since President Franklin Roosevelt to be re-elected with an unemployment rate over 7%. This proves that albeit split in half, Americans believe that the president will continue to work hard for the American people. At ROOT press time, the state of Florida was still tallying votes (what else is new?), however, with 303 electoral votes to Romney’s 206 and with 50% of the popular vote to Romney’s 47%, one thing s for certain, Barack Obama is our president for 4 more years!
